As the director of the creative department, you need to be able to handle a large and small team. This means taking the lead when brainstorming creative ideas to find the best course of action to develop new products or advertise for current products. This includes finding advertising and packaging that all work together. Creative director’s make sure all sides of a product are represented by one specific campaign. You need to be able to listen to ideas and work with the team and eventually make the final decision.
Web Design
Creative directors now have to take into account web design as well. When launching products you need to have an effective website to tell customers what your product is and how they can get their hands on it. The website must be tied in with the company as well as the product. The creative director will work with the web designer to find the best way to promote the company and its products.
Quality
As the creative director you are ultimately responsible for the quality of the final work. You must take into account the cost of the work and the product as well as what it will ultimately look like. If your company does creative work for clients you need to plan how to best work within the confines of the budget of the project. This might mean pointing the client in a direction that is less labor intensive if you know you need to keep costs down. Because of this, you are the one of hiring and firing the people in the various departments. Sometimes you simply hire the heads of the department and in other circumstances you will hire the entire department.
Video Games
Video game creative directors work with the gaming designers to make sure the levels are all going to be cohesive. You will help make sure the story of the game matches the overall look of the final product. From there you will marry the look of the game with the promotions for the game to come up with an advertising campaign that will encourage people to purchase the new product.
Films
For the film and television industry, the creative director works closely with the director to help design the look of the film. This includes deciding on costume design, set design and even the overall look of the prints. The creative director meets with all the creative departments in order to bring the information to the director and get final approval of the work. You will often be presenting the departments with preliminary drawings that they will then turn into a more specific design. You must make sure everything flows together and that the departments work together.
