There are many types of teachers in the world so when you are looking at a teacher job description you need to think about what your professional goals are. You will look within your specialty as well as the appropriate grade level to find the right teaching position for you. Every teaching position requires extensive in-classroom focus as well as lots of planning outside of the classroom. There are many objectives that must be met that are not student specific but benefit students in the long term.
Planning
First as a teacher you must develop lesson plans and teaching schedules according the rules laid out by your district. Each school district lays out specific learning requirements based on the curriculum chosen by the district and the national and state tests required by your region. Often your curriculum will be partially dependent on what the testing parameters are. Beyond the curriculum you need to plan how you will present the information to your students in order to best prepare them for their tests. This includes mapping out your presentation, homework schedule and special assignments so the students grasp the material in the most effective way possible.
Relationship with you Students
You need to develop a relationship with your students. It is imperative that the students know they can come to you with any problems they might have as well as questions surrounding the assignments and material. In addition to developing an open relationship you need to also set boundaries. Students need to know what is expected of them and the consequences should they not follow through with their work.
Parental Relationships
Beyond developing student relationships you need to formulate communication with the parents. You need to decide what your style will be for letting the parents know the good and bad things their students do. It is important to communicate positive information as well as the problems. Education is about encouragement and the more involved the parents are, the more successful the students will be.
Utilizing Technology
In addition to the provided curriculum, it is important to use current technology to help supplement your teaching style. Technology forms a large part of the work force and the more familiar your students are with the technological aspects of the world, the more prepared they will be for the future. It is also helpful to reach them on their level. Kids tend to enjoy technology and like working within their comfort zone.
Skills
To be a teacher, the most important skill is patience, followed closely by communication. The more patient you are the more likely it is you will able to reach your students. You must be good at problem solving, critical thinking, learning organization and the ability to multi-task. You should develop a high competency when it comes to both verbal and written communication. You need to be able to communicate with your students in both formats as students learn differently and it is your job to reach all types of learners.
