Training coordinators work in a company to provide ongoing training to existing employees and proper introductory training to new employees. The position requires extensive planning and the ability to multi-task as you will be required to know many different codes and requirements for various positions. It is important that you understand the needs of all the departments so you can prepare a proper training course and stay on top of recertification demands where necessary.
On-Going Training
On-going training consists of offering classes to employees to keep up with various certifications and licensures. As an employer it saves you time and money if you provide your employees a way to keep up with continuing education requirements within the facility. If you cannot provide the classes, the training coordinator will provide employees with a list of options. You should also work with the accounting department to determine if you can offer financial compensation for various training elements that must be accomplished off-site.
Training Plan
You will develop the necessary training materials and determine how the training will happen for new employees. Depending on how your company works you need to determine the most cost-effective way to train people as well as the most efficient way to complete the training process. You will develop various manuals and instruction materials so that the employees know what is expected of them. You will also determine what types of tests should be administered to verify an employee’s competence in various arenas. You need to work with the departments to determine what the supervisors feel is lacking and develop a training routine that addresses any issues. You should formulate a communication plan so that you can constantly evolve the training process to be more effective and efficient.
Teaching
In some instances you will be the teacher while other cases will require you outsource or hire a teacher for particular types of instruction. You will be responsible for all the scheduling of training events and should coordinate with all the departments to best accommodate the needs of the department heads as well as the employees. The training coordinator must work to keep training on budget and to minimize employee turnover as training new employees always costs more than retaining current employees.
Skills and Education
Typically you should have some form of teaching skills and a great ability to communicate. You need to be excellent at planning as well as multi-tasking to make sure everything is done in a timely manner. There is not typically a credentialling requirement, but most training coordinators have a bachelor’s degree in business, communication, human resources or a specific discipline related to the company you work for. Healthcare training coordinators are often nurses so they have a medical basis for the training they teach.

Training coordinators make anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 per year depending on the size of the company and the knowledge base required to handle the training. These salaries are very negotiable depending on the company and the specific job requirements.
